How to Train Marijuana by Topping

    The question of how to train cannabis by topping is commonly asked by many growers. In fact, it’s not a complicated procedure! Pruning is a simple and effective step that will regulate the growth of cannabis not only without harming it, but also with benefits, increasing yields. Being pruned, the plant can:

  • Grow faster
  • Not waste resources on unnecessary foliage / vertical growth
  • Direct its energy to a bigger yield
Do not prune autoflowering plants! They need to vegetate unstressed, otherwise their development will be impaired.

    With photoperiod varieties, topping is a great training method. At the very least, some outdoor growers are interested in hiding their bushes – limiting their growth is of use for that purpose. Besides, pruning also opens up the possibility of taking cuttings from the plant for hydroponics.

    After the plant is topped, the stem is divided into two parts each time - into two shoots that emerge from the nearest leaf axils and continue their growth. It is worth noting that Indica has a lesser need of pruning than Sativa, because it is initially less tall and wider in its structure.

When should I top my marijuana?

    Remember, pruning should not be done until the plant has grown its first five lobed leaves. Experienced growers often top the plant in its 4-5th week of growth. During that period, the effect is side branches developing very actively, and all the space around is filled with them. After each branch is pruned, the plant needs a few days to recover from the stress and redirect its vital energy back into growth and development.

    Early or mid-vegetation is more appropriate for topping than late vegetation or flowering. This way, the plant will be able to heal. The resin and sap that it excretes are for closing and disinfecting the wound.

Topping cannabis: do’s and don’ts

    Do not forget that the tops contain a lot of the plant's vitality, also the tops are going to become beautiful buds over time. Don’t overdo it, otherwise, the plant will be stressed and its growth stunted.

    We remind our dear customers that you can also buy cannabis seeds in bulk for a fantastic price or retail seeds from the Netherlands, also seeds from Canada and Jamaica are offered.

    Don’t cut each new knot on the plant. It is better to cut every other (or every third) node, then the plant will recover successfully. Before cutting a new branch, you should see if the old node cut last time has grown back at least a few millimeters.

A few simple rules to round up:

  • Use sharp clean scissors disinfected with alcohol – don’t break the branches manually;
  • Plants that look unwell should not be topped until they get better;
  • Topping is not done for having a smoke. If you cut off buds in early flowering, the yields will reduce substantially.
